Northern View Community Move-out Checklist

Here’s everything you need to do to successfully move out of your room. If you have any questions, talk to Northern View Community staff or contact the Work Request Office at 815-753-4948 or wro@niu.edu.

Schedule Appointment and Prepare

• Sign up for a checkout appointment with your community advisor before your last final. You must check out 24 hours after your last final. Finish everything else on this list before your appointment.
• Change your forwarding address with USPS at usps.com/umove and update your permanent address on MyNIU.
• Discuss common area cleaning tasks with your roommate, especially if you are checking out at different times.

Remove Belongings

• Remove all personal belongings from the apartment.
• Donate any items in reasonable shape to the blue Goodwill bins located in the NV Community Center.
• Remove all trash and unwanted personal belongings from the apartment and take it to the dumpster.

Perform Cleaning and Other Tasks

Empty and thoroughly clean your:

• Fridge and freezer.
• Stove and oven.
• Sink and garbage disposal.
• Dishwasher.
• Microwave.
• Kitchen drawers and cabinets.
• Bathroom drawers and cabinets.
• Closets.

Be sure to:

• Sweep, mop and vacuum all floors.
• Close and lock the windows.
• Close the blinds.
• Turn off all overhead fans.
• Set the thermostat to cool and 70°F.

During Your Check-out Appointment

• Turn off the lights.
• Stay with staff during the appointment and make sure staff closes and locks your doors when you leave.
• Clear out your mailbox and pick up any packages.
• Return all keys to the staff member checking you out.
• Sign your key envelope form.
