Fall 2023 Move-In

Welcome to your home away from home! Whether you are a new or returning Huskie, there is nothing more exciting than move-in day and we're here to make it a safe and efficient process for you. To have a successful transition to your new home, we encourage you to read all the information below.

Move-In Dates

• New students: Wednesday, Aug. 23 and Thursday, Aug. 24
• Returning students: Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27

Get Ready to Move-in: Before You Arrive

1. Sign up for a move-in appointment. New and returning fall residents are required to register for a move-in appointment to be allowed entry to their residence hall or Northern View apartment. Appointments will occur in half-hour blocks throughout each day. Information regarding appointment sign-up has been distributed to NIU student emails.
2. Review what to bring. Check out our “What to bring” page for a packing list of what you should and shouldn't bring with you to campus!
3. Determine the height of your bed. Junior loft is the standard bed height in all residence halls. Requests only need to be made if you would like your bed to be changed to a low loft. High lofts are no longer an option in any residence halls.
4. Get and activate your NIU OneCard ID Card. If you do not have your NIU OneCard already, make sure to visit NIU's OneCard ID Services Office to obtain your card. Your OneCard is required to gain access into your residence hall.
5. Know your housing assignment. Log into your MyHousing portal to view your room assignments, roommate(s), and meal plan.
6. Connect with your roommate(s) or suitemates. Communicate and coordinate what each of you will bring to campus.
7. Plan and prepare items to help with your move-in. Be ready for anything on move-in day! Bring water to stay hydrated, a rechargeable battery bank and dress comfortability. Don't forget to double check the weather and traffic conditions on your move-in day.
8. Connect with your fellow Huskies! Get in touch with other incoming students and stay-up-to-date on important university announcements via your class Facebook group.

Move-in Day Steps

1. Arrive on time at your hall's unloading zone: your move-in appointment time is unique, and we need you to please adhere to that time to help the entire day run smoothly. Please make sure to give yourself plenty of time to travel to NIU and to arrive within 10 minutes of your scheduled move-in appointment. There will be signs around campus to help you find your way to your residence hall. View directions to each residence hall and to Northern View Community.
2. Check in at your residence hall: after you arrive at your residence hall's unloading zone, you will be directed to your hall's designated check-in location to collect your room key and welcome packet. A photo ID is necessary for check-in; don't forget to have it handy.
3. Unloading your belongings: we will have unloading areas for you to unpack your car. Our volunteers will be outside each hall for first-year students moving in on August 23 and 24 to direct and assist you. We ask that you pack all your belongings into one vehicle and label items with your name, hall and room number. That will help volunteers make sure your items arrive at your new home. After unloading your car, staff will direct you or a member of your party to long-term parking.
4. Move-in! After your vehicle is removed from the unloading zone, you can return to your room to set up your space. A limited supply of moving carts will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have your own hand cart, feel free to bring it along.
