Student Conduct retains records related to student and organizational conduct. For more information on the retention of conduct records, refer to the Code of Student Conduct (PDF). The release of these records is governed by multiple laws. There are different request forms for different kinds of records.
Your Individual Record
Conduct records are considered education records. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a student has the right to review their own education record.
Since NIU is subject to federal and state Freedom of Information Act laws (FOIA), the general public may request a student’s conduct record. FOIA statutes govern the release of these records, which may be redacted.
Audio recordings of preliminary conferences and conduct hearings are considered part of a student’s education record, and their release is governed by FERPA and FOIA.
