Northern Illinois University

Hello Huskie,

I am excited to join NIU this year as your interim vice president for Student Affairs. As my team and the entire NIU community prepare to welcome you to campus later this week and into next week, we want to ensure that you get all the resources and support you need to have a great year!

Do you want to hear the best tip for success at NIU? It’s getting engaged early – with your faculty, with our staff, and with your fellow students!

Huskies who do more than go to classes on our bustling campus are more likely to be successful and to complete degrees — and make connections that last well beyond graduation.

How can you make the most of your Huskie experience and build skills that will help you beyond your time at NIU? Here are just a few ideas:

Claim your scene on campus. Your first assignment before the semester begins is to have fun and explore your home here at NIU. Some of you have been on campus before. Some of you have never been on campus as an in-person student. However, everyone will experience campus in new ways this year.

Week of Welcome to is your window into all that awaits you at NIU. There is a full lineup of events and activities running from Wednesday through Sunday. Two “Can’t-miss” highlights are the Welcome Holmes and the President’s Welcome Back Picnic!

Watch for all the activities on campus - many will start with our exciting athletic teams. Come and spend some time watching our Huskie football team dominate our opponents on the field at Huskie Stadium. Support all our amazing teams competing in Women's and Men's sports this year. Club sports, intramurals and fitness classes are just a few of the other ways you can engage and stay in shape. Get into the Huskie Spirit!

Lead, serve and make friends. It’s easy to seek out Huskies with similar interests, just by coming to the Holmes Student Center! The massive, newly renovated ground-floor space is where you’ll find our home for Student Organizations, the Campus Activities Board, NIU’s Student Government Association, and Fraternity and Sorority Life. The HSC also offers food options, Starbucks, bowling and much more.

Reach out for help right away. You always have an advocate at NIU, whether seeking help with an accommodation from our Disability Resource Center or connecting to our experts in Counseling and Consultation Services and Student Wellness. If you’re unsure where to turn, our Center for Student Assistance is your place to start for any question about our campus that you may have!

Trying to identify a good first step? Check out some Huskie-to-Huskie advice, and make sure you join your NIU Facebook group so you can start meeting your classmates right away, and stay up-to-date on Huskie announcements and upcoming programs!

As your vice president for Student Affairs, I’m honored to be part of your journey this academic year. Be on the lookout for opportunities to join me for coffee or lunch. I want to hear about your experience, find ways to help you along your journey at NIU, and partner with you in your success!

Welcome to the start of your new semester and a fall full of possibilities.

Sincerely,

Charlie J. Fey, Ed.D.
Interim Vice President
