Get Ready to Move In

  • 1. Sign Up for a Move-in Appointment

New and returning fall residents are required to register for a move-in appointment to be allowed entry to their residence hall or Northern View apartment. Appointments will occur in half-hour blocks throughout each day as noted above.

    Sign Up for Appointment

  • 2. Determine What to Bring

Review what you should bring to campus. Label items with your name, hall and room number and plan to pack them into one vehicle.

    Be sure to:

    • Connect with your roommate(s) or suitemates to coordinate what each of you will bring.
    • Plan what to bring to help with your move-in, including water to stay hydrated and a rechargeable battery bank.
  • 3. Get and Activate Your OneCard

You’ll need your NIU OneCard ID to enter your residence hall. OneCards are mobile, meaning you can access them on your phone. Contact OneCard ID Services for assistance.

  • 4. Know Your Housing Assignment

Log in to the MyHousing portal to view your room assignments, roommate(s) and meal plan. Learn how to read your room number at go.niu.edu/roomnumber.

How to Move In

  • 1. Arrive on Time

Plan to arrive at your hall’s unloading zone within 10 minutes of your scheduled move-in appointment time. Your timely arrival is essential to helping the day run smoothly. You can view directions to residence halls and Northern View Community, and there will be signs around campus to help you find your way.

  • 2. Check In at Your Residence Hall

After you arrive at the unloading zone, you’ll be directed to the check-in location to get your room key and welcome packet. You’ll need your NIU OneCard (or a photo ID) to check in.

  • 3. Unload Your Belongings

There will be unloading areas for you to unpack your car. Some volunteers will be outside each hall on August 20 and August 21 to direct and assist first-year students. After unloading your car, staff will direct you or a member of your party to long-term parking.

  • 4. Move In

After your vehicle is moved from the unloading zone, you can return to your room to set up your space. A limited supply of moving carts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have your own hand cart, feel free to bring it along.
