Full-Time Residence Hall Director

The residence hall director provides primary leadership and overall management of a residence hall housing approximately 500 students. This position is directly supervised by a complex director. This live-in position involves a level of accessibility and accountability to all students and staff. The residence hall director is responsible for fostering a responsible, inclusive community; providing intentional, development-based supervision; utilizing sound fiscal management and business practices; and ensuring a safe, comfortable living environment for students. The residence hall director also works closely with faculty advisors and house coordinators who provide leadership and support for the living-learning communities in the building. All residential communities support and contribute to the mission of our institution.

The residence hall director position is a 12-month live-in position with a meal plan available when dining services are in operation. They receive a competitive annual salary and benefits package, reserved parking at a reduced rate and professional development opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Community Development

  • Supervises one to two graduate assistants and 10-18 community advisors.
  • Promotes the development and implementation of the residential curriculum.
  • Actively participates as a member of the area team, along with additional residence hall directors, graduate residence hall directors, complex coordinators, office support staff, community police officers, dining staff and facilities staff.
  • Coordinates the selection, training, development and evaluation of student staff.
  • Promotes and develops an inclusive and academically supportive community.
  • Collaborates directly with faculty advisors and academic house coordinators, who provide leadership for the living-learning communities housed in the residence halls.
  • Creates intentional efforts to interact with students and provide opportunities for student growth and development.
  • Counsels, advises and refers residents on personal and academic matters.
  • Responds to crisis and emergency situations and communicates necessary information appropriately.
  • Advises community council.
  • Seeks opportunities to work collaboratively with departmental, divisional and campus partners through committees, liaison relationships and other interactions.
  • Actively participates in residential academic offerings.
  • Responsibilities could include an opportunity to teach a section of UNIV 101, coordinating tutorial or group study programs or overseeing a peer academic advisor program.
  • Supports the mission, policies and procedures of the department and university.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Acts as a university representative at campus events.

Administration

  • Adjudicates university and Housing and Residential Services policies.
  • Advises and coordinates the student judicial board for assigned complex.
  • Supports the complex coordinator in the overall administrative, developmental and facilities management of the residential area.
  • Manages hall facilities and budget.
  • Works collaboratively with the office support staff to manage building occupancy.
  • Participates in on-call duty rotation including weeknights, weekends and break periods.
  • Establishes and maintains regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Collaborates with other staff within the complex and across Housing and Residential Services to ensure consistency and sharing of best practices.
  • Assists with departmental initiatives as needed.
  • Assists with summer conference operations or other summer projects as assigned.
  • Serves as a campus security authority and assists with the process of reporting crimes to maintain accurate and timely crime statistics and to increase the safety of the campus.

Position Requirements

  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education administration, counseling or related field.
  • Experience with supervision, selection, training and development of residence hall staff.
  • Ability to effectively respond to crisis, manage fiscal resources and adjudicate university policy violations.
  • Understanding of and commitment to developing inclusive communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of and strong commitment to student development theory.
  • Desire to work as part of a team and offer innovative approaches to problem solving.
  • Successful background check clearance.
  • Start Date: Mid-July

Compensation

  • Salary: $35,568 per year.
  • Housing in residence hall: furnished two-bedroom/one-bathroom apartment with local phone, cable services and high-speed internet.
  • Meal plan when Campus Dining Services is in operation.
  • Other benefits: Tuition waiver, professional development funds and reserved parking at a reduced rate (taxable benefit and domestic partnership benefits available).
