At Northern Illinois University we acknowledge that women, men, nonbinary individuals and transgender people, may also identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. Through our work, we foster inclusion and recognize underrepresented identities as intersectional and impacted by the multiple identities a person may hold.

The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, commonly known as the GSRC, is a home away from home that provides opportunities for student connections, engagement, relevant resources, and support networks for LGBTQ+ people though a gender equity, feminist, womanist and racial justice lens. We work collaboratively with other departments to create workshops, presentations, programs and conferences on topics that are important to people who identify as or support those in the trans spectrum community.

The GSRC offers leadership development resources such as LGBTQ+ Speakers Bureau, Transitions and the TransAction Task Force. LGBTQ+ Ally Training and Trans Ally Training are free and open to the NIU community and region. Many of our interactive events and discussions involve media, pop culture and history and their impact on the LGBTQ+ community. Friendly and supportive GSRC staff can offer their assistance for students with questions or concerns about LGBTQ+ identities.
