As an NIU student you have the right to a safe and secure environment in which to live and learn. There are several resources on campus available to students who have been victimized, or want to report behavior or actions which may be a violation of the NIU Student Code of Conduct, or other applicable university policy.
You may contact NIU Police by calling 815-753-1212 or stopping by their headquarters on Wirtz Drive next to Health Services. The NIU Police serve as the law enforcement agency of record for all incidents occurring on Northern Illinois University campus property. The NIU Department of Police & Public safety consists of sworn law enforcement officers and civilian personnel. The university police have the same rights, responsibilities and authority as any municipal, state or federal law enforcement agency. Please note that the NIU Department of Police & Public Safety may have limited ability to respond to incidents occurring off campus. (You should contact the NIU Department of Police & Public Safety for incidents occurring on campus.)
You may contact the DeKalb Police Department by calling 815-748-8400 or stopping by their headquarters at 701 East Lincoln Highway. The DeKalb Police serve as the law enforcement agency of record for all incidents occurring within the City of DeKalb, Illinois, excluding, Northern Illinois University campus property. The DeKalb Police Department consists of sworn law enforcement officers and civilian personnel. Please note that the DeKalb Police may have limited ability to respond to incidents occurring on campus. (You should contact the DeKalb Police for incidents occurring off campus, including at fraternity and sorority houses.)
You may contact the Office of the Ombudsperson by dialing 815-753-1414 or stopping by the office on the 6th floor of the Holmes Student Center. The Office of the Ombudsperson provides you with guidance to help solve a variety of university-related issues or conflicts. The office offers confidential, neutral, informal and independent guidance. While the office cannot provide legal advice or advocate on your behalf, the staff can advise you of your rights within the university.
For medical care, please contact Health Services by dialing 815-306-2777 or stopping by their office on the corner of Lucinda Avenue and Wirtz Drive. Health Services provides a variety of medical care including x-rays, screening and laboratory services, as well as a variety of examinations for men and women.
You may contact Student Wellness by dialing 815-753-9755. The office provides information and programming on a variety of issues, including alcohol and drugs, safe sexual activity and relationship violence.
You may contact the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center by dialing 815-753-4772 or stopping by their office at 105 Normal Road. The center is open to men and women and has information available about many women's issues.
Victims of domestic violence or sexual assault may contact DeKalb County Safe Passage by dialing 815-756-5228. Safe Passage is a community resource that provides information, counseling and a safe facility for victims of domestic violence.
You may contact Counseling & Consultation Services by dialing 815-753-1206 or stopping by their office on the second floor of the Campus Life Building. Counseling & Consultation Services provides free and confidential counseling to all currently enrolled students. The Counseling Center offers both individual and group counseling to students. Additionally, Advocacy Services is located within Counseling & Consultation Services. State of Illinois Certified Victim Advocates are available.
You may contact the Disability Resource Center by dialing 815-753-1303 or stopping by their office in the Campus Life Building, Suite 180. The center works to provide reasonable and appropriate accommodations to students and the campus community. Classroom and exam accommodations, reformatting of course materials and adaptive technology are a few of the services the center offers.
You may contact the Employee Assistance Program by calling 815-753-9191. The program enhances the well-being of all NIU faculty, staff, retirees and their families through coaching, counseling, support, training and information.
