Smoke-Free Campus

More than 700 colleges and universities nationwide are smoke-free because of the Smoke-Free Campus Act, which prohibits smoking on all state-supported higher education institutions including public university and community college campuses.

Northern Illinois University strives to provide a healthy and safe environment for students, faculty and staff on which to work and live. Facilitating the Smoke-Free Campus Act is just one way we can do this. That is why, effective July 1, 2015, the NIU campus is smoke-free.

This policy applies to all individuals on campus including:

  • Students
  • Faculty
  • Staff and employees
  • Visitors, guests and the public
  • Contractors, subcontractors, vendors

Providing a smoke-free campus is one step that makes an impact on the health of every person on campus. Providing smoke-free air to breathe reduces the effects of second hand smoke and help to decrease smoking rates.

The entire campus is smoke-free. Please refer to this map to see all campus borders.
