Community Advisor

Community Advisor applications for 2009-2010 academic year are being accepted until Monday, September 21, 2009. After completing the application below, qualified candidates will be notified of their interview times on September 23. All CA interviews will be held on Friday, September 25.

Candidates are required to attend an informational session below:


September 8, 7pm - Douglas Smart classroom
September 16, 9pm - Grant South Formal
September 21, 4pm - Neptune NE/SE meeting room

Other requirements are as follows:

  • Must have completed 24 credit hours by the end of the semester in which they are applying
  • Have at least a 2.3 semester and cumulative GPA
  • Available for meetings on Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm
  • One semester group living experience.

The Community Advisor is a student staff member who lives on the floor and works under the direct supervision of a hall director. It is the Community Advisor's job to encourage individual growth while promoting a safe, secure, and welcoming community where students can have a positive living and learning experience.

Community Advisor's responsibilities include:

Assisting residents with personal and academic concerns.
Encouraging the development of mature behavior among residents.
Maintaining an atmosphere conducive to academic excellence.
Coordinating programs and events that address the academic and personal needs of residents, using the Residential Curriculum model.
Enforcing university policy and regulations, as listed in the Guide Post.

The Community Advisor selection process occurs during both the fall and spring semester, and during the summer when warranted. Compensation includes room & board and a monthly stipend. If you are interested in becoming a Community Advisor, check with your Hall Director for specific information regarding selection timelines and application due dates.

Northern View Community - Community Development Assistant

The Community Development Assistant position at Northern Illinois University works with members of the Northern View Community to identify and resolve conflict and to provide for members' involvement in and ownership of the community. Community Development Assistants are members of the Northern View Community staff. Community Development Assistants work with the NVC staff to provide programs and services to residents of the Northern View Community.

Primary Responsibilities

Community Development Assistants are primarily responsible for conducting and coordinating problem resolution and conflict management initiatives, providing programs for residents, and assisting with the orientation of new residents. Additionally, they are on-call an average of one day each week, one weekend each month, and some time over break periods to assist with emergency situations and provide resource information to residents. They are also responsible for managing facilities that are used by residents for various functions.
