Lead Guide

Role of the "Leader of the Pack"

  • A Lead Guide is a willing participant in an energetic and motivated program.
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Attend all program events
  • A Lead Guide must possess the following:
  • Ability to positively represent the program and University to peers, parents, and corporate sponsors.
  • Willingness to stretch one's comfort zone and improve in areas of public speaking, facilitation, motivation, planning, and implementation.
  • Willingness to serve as an energizer, cheerleader, problem solver, initiator, peer mentor, and NIU Ambassador.
  • “Can do” attitude.

As a Lead Guide, you'll work closely with the NI GUIDE Program Coordinator and NIU residence hall staff in order to ensure thorough planning and implementation of Opening Day events in the halls. You will be in a very visible, demanding role that will prove to be an NIU experience of a lifetime!

Be Yourself — You do not have to be an extrovert to be a Lead Guide; you simply need to have the desire and willingness to LEAD the PACK!

Dates of Service (August 13th-September 13th)

Additional opportunities for the Fall and Spring will be discussed during August training.

Participation in spring meetings, summer training, and fall leadership is mandatory.  

  •  Lead Guide early move-in: Wednesday, August 13 
  •  Lead Guide Training, August 13-20
  •  NI Guide early move-in: Tuesday, August 19 
  •  Thursday, August 21, 2008, Opening Day and The Great Huskie Bash 
  •  Thursday, August 21, 2008 through Sunday, August 24, New Student Welcome Days programs   
  •  Other duties as assigned through September 13th

This is an outstanding volunteer opportunity. Lead Guides are one of the most positively recognized groups of student leaders at NIU. You will be involved with professional staff in planning and implementing great things for fall Opening Day 2008. Lead Guides set the tone for the entire year. Becoming a Lead Guide is a perfect way to start building your resume and expanding your skill base while having a good time! After this one experience, you will know more people on campus than President Peters!

Interview and Selection

All submitted applications will be screened for thoroughness, presentation, and grammar.

All applicants will be contacted regarding the receipt of their application. Screened applicants will be scheduled for a 30 – 45 minute interview with the Event and Marketing Coordinator.
